What to Expect at the 95th Oscars

With the upcoming 2023 Academy Award Show, there comes controversial nominations and non-stop predictions that keep film fans in constant anticipation.
For some, sharing their predictions on who will win the upcoming award shows is an annual tradition, especially for the big-time, annual Oscars. The major-league award show takes place on March 12, 2023, but the nominations for the 95th Oscars have already been announced two months prior. The majority of the Oscar nominations reflected nominations from past Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
The winners of the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards often reflect what movies will do well at the Oscars. As seen over the past few years, like last year with Will Smith winning Best Actor for his lead role in King Richard and The Power of the Dog winning Best Picture. Many students at Marriotts Ridge agreed with the fact that the Golden Globes and Critics Choice wins are possible giveaways for the Oscar wins as the nominees under every category are exactly the same in every annual Academy Award show.
This year’s winnings of the Critics Choice Awards were a reflection of the winning nominees at the Golden Globes. For instance, at both award ceremonies, the actor Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor in the Motion Picture, Everything Everywhere all at Once, and actress Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Knowing the nominees under every category are the same for every Academy Award show, Everything Everywhere All At Once and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever nominations for the Oscars predict they will win under categories they won in previous award shows. Not just these films, but many others that have the possibility of winning under categories they’re nominated for at the Oscars like The Whale having three chances at receiving an Oscar, Elvis having eight and The Fablemans having seven opportunities.
Nominees for the Academy Awards are chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which contains over ten thousand members that are branched off into 17 different branches for each category. The listed nominees are then ranked based on their prevalence and preference within the public media, and the nominees go through several rounds of voting until the winners are clear to the members.
With the knowledge of how the voting processes of Academy Award Shows like the Oscars work, the question is often asked if votes were rigged or not. One can argue that the wins and selected nominees are predictable or biased because of either how other Academy Award Shows played out or just what films and series have been the most popular.
Needless to say, with the 95th Oscars approaching, it’s best to keep the predictions flowing in accordance prior to the Academy Award Show, and have high hopes for all Oscar-nominated films and actors. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the awards will be airing on March 12, 2023, at 8:00 pm EDT. Keep watch to see what will win for this year’s 95th annual Oscars.
