With the new school year here, Marriotts Ridge High School decided to modify the class shirts its been using for the past few years. With a new design and color scheme, Mustangs determine if these class shirts are still worth purchasing.
“I like last year’s class shirt better, but I still bought this year’s class shirt to support my school,” sophomore Siri Makam explains.
Each year, MRHS sells shirts for every grade in the school. These shirts display which grade a student is in, and school spirit. This year, each class shirt was redesigned, with the new design being a horseshoe on the front of the T-shirt, as well as the students’ grade and class on the back. This new design, however, has been controversial to many students.
“I think the shirts should be more creative. I feel like it’s just random to have a horseshoe on the front,” freshmen Nicole Jimenez states.
Many students have a negative opinion of the class shirts because of the new horseshoe design on the front of the shirt. On top of that, numerous juniors and sophomores are disappointed with the bland color scheme of their shirt. In previous years, seniors, juniors and sophomores had tie-dye on their shirts, but now, sophomores and juniors have solid colors. Although, for some Mustangs, this is an improvement.
“I like the new class shirts better, because the tie-dye looked kind of weird for juniors and sophomores,” junior Emma Okoeva justifies.
Some students can say that getting rid of the tie-dye boosted the appeal of the new shirts. For example, last year’s shirt for sophomores was originally a bright blue, but this year the color has been changed to a denim blue. And instead of a gray and white swirl for juniors, they have a plain white shirt.
“I like the new color for the sophomore shirts. It’s a better color than last year,” sophomore Saanvi Mamilla claims.
Students have varying opinions on the new color schemes and designs. However, there is still one more matter, which affected whether Mustangs bought their new class shirt. This year, the delivery method of the class shirts has been replaced. Instead of receiving the shirt from school, students had to order a class shirt online and get it mailed to their house. With this new method, some students are worrying.
“Getting it in real life from school is better, because the shipping process could get delayed. And then I wouldn’t have my shirt in time for the pep rally,” Okoeva reports.
Many students are worried about when their shirts will be delivered and whether it will be in time for the pep rally. However, this isn’t the only problem some Mustangs have with the delivery method. Many students are also frustrated with the added cost of the shipping.
“I like getting my shirt from school better, because the shipping takes a long time, and it’s an extra ten dollars,” Mamilla explains.
Because students get their shirts mailed, the prices increased drastically, and now include a ten dollar fee for shipping. This price change has discouraged many students from buying their class shirt, demonstrating how the new delivery method can be a problem.
“Buying a class shirt from the school is better, because I get it right then, instead of waiting for it to be mailed to my house,” junior Nico Dinisio states.
Some students believe that the new delivery system is better because of the efficiency. Rather than waiting in a line to receive a class shirt, students would just have the shirt sent to them instead.
“I think getting it mailed is better because it’s much easier to remember. Buy it once and then it’s at my house,” Makam disagrees.
When comparing the new class shirts to the old class shirts, the argument can go both ways. Both shirts each have benefits and drawbacks, and MRHS Mustangs have to decide that with a new design, new color scheme and new delivery process, whether these new class shirts are still worth purchasing.
