The Mustangs’ fall season brings smiles upon students as they get to cheer for their favorite boys and girls soccer, football, field hockey and volleyball teams work their magic. The team’s hard work in the off-season is finally being put to use.
Opening up with varsity boys soccer, head coached by Mr.Khouri, assistant coached by Fred Tediosio and managed by Joaquim Leiser. One of the keys to their success is a whole team of talented players that have been playing since they were little.
“I think the team is going to be very good this year because we have a lot of depth and players that can fit into multiple different roles to help the team,” freshmen Jake Hammond said.
Football is additionally looking to have a great season headed by seniors Quinn Cestone, Boston Brown and Daniel Goering. They have had two great wins so far, beating Hammond and Oakland Mills. Unfortunately, they lost a key player, Jackson Berry to an injury against Oakland Mills.
“This season is going to be different from the others because we have a ton of players who have bought into this season, which has created a winning atmosphere,” said Jackson Berry.
The football team believes that they can win and so far have shown flashes of being a great team.
Also off to a hot start, girls soccer, coached by Coach K, is looking to be a pretty unbeatable squad. Led by captains Bridget Ford and Anna Hendrickson, they have had impressive wins with a large score differential. The squad have had some very impressive wins, including a win 3-0 against Reservoir High School and tied Glenelg, the team predicted to be the best team in the county, 1-1.
“The chemistry and the way we are able to bond at pasta parties, in school and on the field is one of the biggest components to our success,” senior Bridget commented.
The girls soccer team looks to build on their early season success, hoping to finish the season on top of the county and maybe the state.
Not to be outmatched, the field hockey team, led by senior Rachel Harper have stepped up in their first few games. Even though the team lost a lot of significant players last year, many underclassmen were able to work hard and fill those roles. These girls are so successful due to the off season work and dedication at practices.
“Although we lost many impactful players last year, many players stepped up to fill the roles which is why we are successful,” said Coach Milani.
Lastly, volleyball has been making improvements with senior Jasmin Kirkland coming back from an injury, and are looking to have a great season and make a run deep into the playoffs. Some of the keys to athletic success at MRHS are tight relationships within teams and supporting one another. Athletes have great relationships with their teammates and coaches by being respectful to one another on and off the field. Athletes also show out to support each other, cheering at games and providing energy and motivation.
All the athletes are grateful for the dedication and care that the coaches show them. They are always there for them through their ups and downs and fix their issues. These are all the components that create the fall sports to be in a winning atmosphere.
