Presumably bound for a smooth outset, the first quarter began at Marriotts Ridge High School in late August. Students approached the early weeks of school with a positive outlook, ready to tackle the year ahead. Now, with the first quarter coming to a close, students reflect on their first quarter experiences to make improvements moving forward.
Positivity and work ethic are some of the focal characteristics of a successful student, but they are not always a solution to the pressures placed on high schoolers. Regardless of mindset, high schoolers struggle with time management, which is exacerbated by extracurricular involvement.
“Time management with academics and sports is difficult. [It] would be easier and less stressful if I procrastinated less [and if] the school assigned more balanced work,” admits sophomore Nico Musters.
Aside from time management, a common issue among students is insufficient sleep.
“My biggest [difficulty] was [sticking] to a more consistent sleep schedule,” states sophomore Dhyaan Vijily.
Amid the strain of fitting extracurriculars, homework, sleep and pastimes into their schedule daily, students can still enjoy their hobbies and memorable events like the Pep Rally.
“I [enjoyed] watching the games at the Pep Rally and getting to spend time with my friends,” remarks junior Sahasra Pola.
A student’s academic career consists of numerous major grades, school-sponsored events and academic achievements that show their hard work and dedication.
“[This quarter] I [passed] government and English, which in previous years I got bad grades in,” asserts sophomore Nathan Wagaman.
Just as there are academic victories, there are academic losses as well.
“I bombed my first math test and should’ve [studied] limits more thoroughly,” says sophomore Anniue Yuan.
After the comforts of summer break, mentally adjusting to an early wake-up time proved to be a simple task for most students.
“There wasn’t a transition from summer since I spent most of [it] studying anyways,” added Yuan.
In short, this past quarter was a test for many students. Many held new academic and extracurricular responsibilities and were forced to adapt to a new schedule. However, they overcame this hurdle in a process combining flexibility, patience and resolve to be the best students they could be. These vital qualities of determination build a community of hard working students and make MRHS a great place to learn. Looking forward, students’ hope their experiences and grades continue to improve and MRHS continues to be a thriving community that fosters a positive and functional learning environment for all.
