The Major League Baseball playoffs are here and students at Marriotts Ridge High School have their thoughts and predictions ready. Twelve teams, including the Baltimore Orioles will fight to win the World Series in November. In the Baltimore area, there has been a buzz of excitement, as the Baltimore Orioles are in the playoffs for the first time since 2016, when they lost in the wildcard round. This year, the Orioles placed first in the American League Conference. Students also were asked if the Orioles have what it takes to win it all.
As far as winning the world series, many favorites have been named. The Atlanta Braves, who had the best record in the MLB have been predicted by many to win it all this fall. The Braves finished with a record of 104-58.
“I think the Braves could win it all this year. They had the best record in the MLB and were consistent in getting wins all year,” freshman Jason Devito said.
There have also been many sleeper picks to win the World Series in November.
“I’m gonna go with an underdog. I think that the Diamondbacks are going to win the World Series this year,” freshman Aiden Hlavaty predicted.
In the playoffs, anything can happen regardless of how good a team’s season was. Upsets and the emergence of star players are something to look out for.
“I think that the Phillies could be a team to look out for in the playoffs. Even though they are in the wildcard round they have the third best record in the National League so I think they could potentially make some noise,” said sophomore Zach McGee.
The MLB playoffs are up for grabs this season as there is no evidently dominant team. Every team has a chance to win it all.
In Baltimore, there has been excitement in the sports world as the Baltimore Orioles had a spectacular season. They have missed the playoffs for the last six seasons and fandom for the Orioles was at a very low point during these past few years. The Orioles even finished with the worst record in the MLB a few times during these last seven years. However, with the addition of a new young core of players, the Orioles were able to turn it around starting last season. They made progress by finally ending the season with a winning record. This year they went on to surprise many by showing tremendous growth and ending the regular season with the best record in the American League Conference, 101-61.
“The Orioles have surprised me. They have a lot of good young talent who have played really well this season,” senior Jack Schwendeman explained.
All of Baltimore now has their eyes on what the Orioles can do in the postseason. Due to their record, being best in the American League Conference, they avoided the wildcard round and were automatically placed in the divisional round of the playoffs. They will play the winner of the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers series. The big question is if the Orioles are really ready for the playoffs, considering they have a young team.
“I don’t think they have what it takes to win this season due to that lack of experience. In a few years I think they could win it when they have more postseason experience,” freshman Jason Devito said.
The MLB playoffs are finally starting and in full effect. Teams that played well in the regular season are looking to translate that to the postseason in order to make a run and win the World Series. The Orioles are also a team many are excited about, after their amazing play in the regular season.
