Song and suspense hit the stage this February as the Marriotts Ridge Theater and Performing Arts department produced a rendition of Chicago by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb adapted for a teen audience. Inspired by the American roaring 20’s, Chicago featured dark themes, mystery, intrigue and a sweeping jazz score from live MRHS musicians. Focusing heavily on the musical backing to capture the swing jazz bands of time, orchestra, band and a slew of hired professional musicians alike worked to recreate this legendary musical soundtrack.
Ryan Li, a talented senior violinist, brought his musical prowess to the pit orchestra. Rehearsing on Tuesdays and Fridays, Li found a unique challenge as an accompanying musician when long practice sessions created lapses in focus drawing him into the allure of the performance. Nonetheless, immersing himself in the melodies of the show, Li navigated the challenges of live performance with grace and determination.
“Playing in the pit for the first time is both exciting and challenging as I have never accompanied a live performance…I think it’s something all musicians should try,” said Li.
Sophomore Yash Rekula played the tenor saxophone for the play, and was no stranger to dedication and practice. Despite occasional challenges with tempo and coordination, Rekula embraces the exhilarating experience of being a part of something unique, contributing his musical talents to the collective energy of the production.
In his role as the lawyer in the climactic finale of the play, junior Yuvan Jagannathan epitomized dedication and preparation. With meticulous attention to detail, Jagannathan diligently honed his performance by rehearsing his lines and refining his vocal delivery. He emphasized the critical importance of timing, stressing the need to grasp cues to maintain a smooth execution throughout the production. Jagannathan drew inspiration from fellow actors.
“When you have a live pit they can hear what you’re saying and go into the cue so it is easier having the pit help you,” Jagannathan expressed.
Junior Sanika Zarkar eagerly anticipated the upcoming production of Chicago, and like many other students enjoyed seeing her close friends and classmates perform on stage. Inspired by previous performances and the prospect of sharing the experience with friends, Zarkar loved seeing another interpretation of this play as she had seen Chicago previously.
“I loved the Autumn play Joseph, and I couldn’t wait to experience what Chicago has to offer. It was a really enjoyable night made even better by my friends,” explained Zarkar.
Always delivering on its promise of a fulfilling experience for actors and viewers alike, the theater department readies itself for its next show: Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps Featuring a mixed grouping of theater students and passionate club members, the production will feature senior Reyansh Attavar portraying the lead role of Richard Hannay.
“There are a lot of new young people that bring great energy and it’s fun working with a new batch of people who are eager to learn and improve,” Attavar said.
