On February 4th, 2024, the 66th annual Grammy celebration took place, showcasing remarkable artists of trendy new songs and albums. The Grammys honor the most talented nominees with certain awards, such as the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, the Best Artist and many more. However, many audience members have grown agitated with the results over the winners of certain awards, creating a major debate about whether these rewards were truly deserved.
“I think Lana Del Ray should’ve won because she writes her songs in a way that makes her lyrics really deep. Even though Taylor Swift is pretty nice, I still think Lana deserved this award over Taylor,” sophomore Sharon Tewodros argued.
One particular prize that triggered a major dilemma was the Album of the Year award, which was gifted to favored artist, Taylor Swift. However, fans of the other nominees, like Lana Del Ray and SZA, became displeased with this result, convinced that Swift wasn’t as deserving as Del Ray or SZA. Many Del Ray fans recall her songs as captivating and heartfelt, and although Swift is also regarded as a lyrical genius, fans found Del Ray’s lyrics to be more meaningful. As with SZA, fans believed her songs, such as “Nobody Gets Me,” and “Snooze,” justified how SZA deserved the Album of the Year award. Although there are many people who believe Taylor Swift didn’t deserve the Album of the Year award, there are many other fans who believe this award was truly deserved.
“I think Taylor Swift deserved to win because I really love her songs since a lot of them are about love,” defended sophomore Emily Vu.
Taylor Swift’s album, “Midnights” helped her win the Album of the Year, yet many people claim she wasn’t deserving enough. Taylor Swift has won the Album of the Year award three times, proving her more than capable of winning this award once more. Additionally, Taylor Swift’s fan base, also known as Swifites, argue that people aren’t listening to her full album and only judge her songs based off of a few popular songs. Although Swift makes many of her songs about past breakups, her raw emotions and past experiences enhance her songs even further.
Similar to “Midnight’s” release during the MTV Video Music Awards, an award ceremony, Swift announced a brand new album during her speech when receiving her Grammy award. She calls her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department”. Apparently Swift had been working on this new album for the past two years, and dropping it during the Grammys caused a huge uproar with the Swifties. Although the audience had many mixed reactions, overall many Swifties are excited for a whole new album.
“I was very excited when I heard about Taylor Swift’s new album because I’ve always loved her songs and I really enjoy some of the poeticness in the lyrics,” exclaimed junior Madison Gaither.
However, Taylor Swift’s new album wasn’t the only surprise from Grammy night. Famous artist, Killer Mike, had been arrested after winning three Grammy awards. Attention had come upon him for this mind-blowing revelation due to the artist’s success suddenly being ruined by this arrest. Killer Mike had been arrested for an alleged physical altercation with a female security guard. Although it isn’t clear on what happened, Killer Mike ended up being released, and came home with three Grammy awards.
“I think it was really unfortunate when Killer Mike got arrested, and I definitely felt bad for him because he just made a huge accomplishment, and it got completely ruined by getting arrested,” commented sophomore Christopher Chung.
As the Grammy’s gave the spotlight to many different artists and their records, the Grammys were able to reward artists for their hard work and dedication. Although some artists didn’t receive as much attention, simply being a part of the Grammy nominations demonstrated their accomplishments in the music industry. The 66th annual Grammy Awards certainly introduced major dilemmas and surfaced new revelations, making this year’s Grammy celebration one no one can forget.
