Many students experience seasonal depression during the winter months, due to the gloomy, short days. As spring is rounding the corner, the days are becoming longer and spirits are becoming brighter. The warm weather is opening up many fun activities to keep students busy.
Spring sport athletes are excited for the warm weather and team bonding. They are stoked to have their evenings booked with activities and friends. Spending valuable time outside allows students to release negative thoughts and enjoy the moment, resulting in a better mood.
“I look forward to spring sports, the mix of warm weather and spending time exercising outside with my friends, my brother Bryce and my sister Gabby, always leaves me in a positive mood,” said sophomore Boden Pistorio.
The many benefits of sunlight are often overlooked. Better sleep, improved mood and overall enhanced health can be expected after spending time in the sun. Students feel this leads to a better attention span in school.
“I like spring because the amount of sunlight my body takes in helps my body stay safe from hazardous illnesses since Vitamin D makes your bones healthier and feel stronger,” commented senior Seunghwan Lee.
A main reason why students feel down in the winter is because of the cold weather and limited activities. A sedentary lifestyle can leave students feeling down because they have nothing to look forward to. Meanwhile, some students play winter sports and have the opportunity to fill their time with their friends.
“I manage my mood during the winter months by talking to my therapist and playing basketball. I find that being around my team uplifts my spirits and gets me through the dreary months,” added senior Brendon Kim.
As spring is approaching students are beginning to crave their joyful summer habits. Not only do they enjoy the weather, but they are able to surrender their bland and boring routines from the winter.
“I love the spring because the warm weather, sunlight, fresh air, spring sports and after school clubs remind me of the summer. All I can think about is how I tan daily, hang out with my friends and spend time with my family,” remarked sophomore Clare Jenkins.
With cold, gloomy, winter memories left in the past, students begin to hope for a rainy spring with a sprinkle of sunshine, resulting in beautiful landscapes for the summer. Although some students despise the rain, it is beneficial and leads to a healthy environment.
“My lord have mercy, I cannot stand when we do not attain May flowers. Rain is healthy for our environment and my favorite part of May is the blooming tulips, roses and violets. I also dearly enjoy the beautiful scent of them,” said senior Robert Page.
As yet another season passes by, hopes and memories of a better time come flooding back. Around the school, spirits are rising with each passing day. Students are now beginning to stay after school to run, spend time with friends and play spring sports.
