In a startling turn of events, Marriotts Ridge High School experienced complete disbelief upon the midnight release of Mrs. Rashid’s weekly Athletics, Clubs, and Community Announcements on March 3rd. Amidst the usual announcements about club meetings and sports schedules, a shocking statement grabbed every students’ attention: the much anticipated 2024 Prom has been canceled. Mustangs were taken aback by the sudden news, which instantly crushed any hope of having the night of their dreams.
Marriotts Ridge students were shocked and disappointed when they first heard about the Prom cancellation. The news came as a surprise, and many found it hard to believe that an event they had been looking forward to for so long could be canceled so suddenly. It was a letdown for many and Mustangs were left wondering why such a decision was made.
“I was able to go to Prom last year so I don’t really care that it’s canceled, but I heard a rumor that Dr. Dipaula didn’t get to go to his Prom and so he decided to take ours away too,” junior Noah Journo explained.
The reasons cited for the abrupt cancellation were vague, leaving students upset and curious. Some assumed budget cuts, while others whispered about administrative concerns and consequences. Whatever the cause, the result was final: one of the most anticipated events of the 2024 school year had been pulled from the calendar.
Further investigation revealed that the faculty’s decision to cancel the Prom stemmed from concerns about student behavior. With recent incidents involving alcohol and smoking among students, staff members were hesitant to provide another event for such behavior to occur. The decision to cancel the Prom was made in the interest of student safety and well-being, aiming to discourage unsafe behaviors.
“I can’t believe the one thing I have been waiting for this entire school year was taken from me just like that. Now my dress and all the plans I made are going to waste,” senior Brynne Mellady said.
For seniors especially, the cancellation of the Prom was a major loss. This event is seen as the grand finale and peak of every high school experience. Prom represented a milestone, a chance to celebrate the end of an era with their classmates. Losing this opportunity meant missing out on a cherished moment that upperclassmen had been looking forward to throughout their entire high school journey.
“Prom being canceled is lowkey good for me because I’ve got no one to go with. It saves me the trouble of having to find someone at least,” junior Ragib Ahanaf commented.
There was a mix of emotions from the student body following the announcement. Some students admitted to feeling a sense of ease, relieved of the pressure and expectations that come with Prom preparation. For them, the cancellation meant freedom from the stress of finding a date, selecting the perfect outfit, and worrying about extra activities surrounding the event. However, the sudden absence of this opportunity left many students feeling a sense of disappointment and loss.
“My sister wasn’t allowed to go to last year’s Prom and she’s been non-stop talking about going this year. But now she’s always angry and all she can talk about is that she’s ready to get the hell out of this school,” sophomore Shaila Uddin shared.
Over time, Mustangs realized that they must come to terms with the reality of the situation. Some students directed their frustration towards school administration, feeling let down by what they perceived as a lack of consideration for their wants and expectations. Many questions arose about the rationale behind the schools decision and students started to recognize that the Prom cancelation was beyond their control. Rather than dwelling on the cancellation, students shifted their focus towards making the most of their high school experience.
