On April 4th, Marriotts Ridge High School hosted Jazz at the Ridge — an exciting performance featuring students from both MRHS and Mount View Middle School with musical talents. The concert featured several choirs and bands as well as snacks that were supplied by volunteers.
“I think the admission price was worth it. I remember I came to see Jazz at the Ridge when I was a freshman, and I was completely amazed by the talent and music produced by this program,” junior Max Ryon shared.
The evening began at 6:30, with the MRHS Jazz Band performing some snazzy tunes, creating a chill ambience for guests who entered the commons area. In addition to the live music, refreshments were served, including a popcorn station and finger foods. Around 7 pm the first performance took place: an impressive work by the MVMS Jazz Band. They played two upbeat songs that got the audience warmed up for the high school performances, which included the MRHS Women’s Choir and the Madrigals, accompanied by the high school band.
The Women’s Choir performed three songs, including an older classic called “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, “Hey There Mister”, and “Orange Colored Sky.” The singers entertained the audience with smiles on their faces using subtle harmonies and simple choreography. Afterwards, the Madrigals performed, both as just an ensemble and accompanied by the MRHS Jazz Band. Their talent wowed the audience and gained lots of applause.
Following the Madrigals was a brief intermission which allowed audience members to mingle and enjoy desserts in the commons. Cookies, charcuterie, and homemade confections were displayed along decorated tables. After half an hour, guests were invited to sit back in their seats and enjoy the rest of the performances.
To end off the night, soloists sang some well known classics, such as “Fly Me to the Moon”, which was performed by senior Arthur Yang.
“When I step out on the stage, I turn on my performance mode; it’s like my alter ego. Like acting, I try to embody the spirit of the song, the swagger and coolness, and of course the sunglasses helped with that,” Yang explained.
The soloists performances were received well by the audience, the auditorium erupting with cheers and applause.
“I think every single performance was great in its own way and the solos were fantastic,” Ryon explained.
The broad selection of voices, genres and ages gave the evening a sweet charm and entertained everyone who watched. Many friends and family attended to watch their loved ones perform and were not disappointed.
“I think Jazz at the Ridge was a blast. Everyone had fun and I heard several compliments from the audience,” Ryon agreed. “Overall the Madrigals did pretty well but we’ll do even better at the upcoming spring trip competition.”
Both performers and watchers left with smiles on their faces and a sense of accomplishment in the air, making Jazz at the Ridge a successful evening.
