The Mustangs’ fall season has started, and the excitement of the sports can be felt throughout the school as students cheer for their favorite boy’s and girl’s soccer, field hockey, football, cross-country and volleyball teams. The teams’ hard practice and determination during the off-season are finally beginning to shine. Students and athletes alike share their thoughts on the season.
Many fall sports interest students and get their attention. Reasons that may entice students to join include the sport itself or friends who like to play it. There are many fall sports that students can choose from.
“A fall sport that interests me is soccer. I like playing and watching soccer. I’m really good at playing soccer, and I’m looking forward to playing Centennial because that’s where my old coach is at,” junior Ravish Gaind said.
When playing a sport, one is expected to play all the games present in a single season. Many people look forward to the games, both players and fans alike. Players like to prepare for the games, sometimes weeks before the start date with their team, talking about tactics and strategies they are going to use against the team they are going to play.
“I’m really excited for our Homecoming game against Guilford Park because I haven’t played or seen them play before, so I want to see what they can produce,” junior Adhithya Kasiviswanathan said.
Practice is vital in sports. As people say, ‘with practice comes perfection’. When players practice their sport, either by themselves or with their teammates, they develop a sense of understanding of their game and their skills. They can use their practice to improve on their existing skills and get better. The more someone practices with the people they are playing with, they will get used to playing with them and learn more about their teammates’ skills and weaknesses. Practicing with teammates is positive because when going out to play the actual game, it will be exactly like they practiced, and they will be prepared to play with their teammates.
“I’m working out, keeping my body in shape and fit for the season. I’m also going to practice because I’ll get better at my game in general,” sophomore Soma Dike said.
As expected with any team, there are always going to be challenges. These can include players not coming to practice or having to face harder teams. There are other challenges that a player can face such as not doing their best or not living up to their own expectations. However, there are many ways a player can overcome this. One of these ways is going to more practices or practicing more on their own time to ensure that they are match-ready and fit.
“One challenge that I think we will face is the Glenelg game. They’re a really good team and we lost to them last year, so I think it’ll be a struggle, but we’ll get through it,” junior Usman Shaik said.
As the fall season progresses, the Mustangs’ dedication and hard work are evident both on and off the field. With each game, the athletes continue to hone their skills, face challenges head-on and build camaraderie with their teammates. The excitement and support from the student body fuel their drive to succeed. Whether it’s soccer, field hockey, football or volleyball, the Mustangs are ready to give their all and make this season one to remember.
