As the year starts off with full send, many fun activities have begun for seniors, such as the traditional senior sunrise. On September 5th at 6:35 am, seniors gathered in the school parking lot with friends where they brought blankets, pillows, breakfast and coffee before heading to school. Many also participated in senior traditions such as painting their jeans with festive designs representing the class of 2025. The event was a fun experience for many seniors and will likely turn out to be a lasting memory for most.
There was much careful thought and planning that went into pulling off this long awaited senior year tradition. Done by many other schools across the country, several ideas were pitched in order to create the perfect senior sunrise experience at MRHS. Seniors have been waiting for this event since the beginning of their high school careers, looking forward to this stepping stone into their last year of high school. Just being able to spend time at school with friends in a non-academic setting was a fun experience for many.
“We’ve been waiting since freshman year for these senior events, so senior sunrise was such a fun way to start off our most memorable school year yet,” remarked senior Risha Basatwar.
The parking lot, especially near the athletic entrance, was full of seniors. Many were taking pictures of the rising sun with friends that they hoped to cherish and make memories with for the rest of the year.
“I loved getting to spend time with friends and get pictures with a beautiful background, it was such a fun experience,” commented senior Priya Antes.
The class council of 2025 was responsible for planning and executing the event. After postponing the original date of the event because of rain, students finally convened in the school parking lots the morning of the rescheduled date. However, due to the rescheduling, many seniors were confused. Originally, the event was set to be held Friday, August 30th, during the first week of school. The event was rescheduled for September 5th, the following Thursday.
“After the rescheduling of the event, I heard very little about senior sunrise, and with it being on a Thursday instead of a Friday like it [originally] was, I almost forgot about it,” said senior Sean Zissu.
Rescheduling to a Thursday allowed students more time to participate in senior sunrise traditions such as painting jeans. Many students did not have the time to paint jeans for the original date with it being so sudden, but the rescheduled date allowed students the time to spend time with friends and paint their jeans over the Labor Day weekend.
Many students had ideas for improvements for the following year, remarking that they would love to see lawn games on the field, or even just go and sit out on the field or turf as many other schools did instead of staying in the parking lot for the event. For the next year, the class council of 2026 will hopefully consider these suggestions and make senior sunrise an even more enjoyable experience for the upcoming seniors. Despite the minimal shortfalls, the event was considered a success and became a long lasting memory that seniors will cherish when reminiscing of their high school years.
