Led by dedicated students, MRHS Spanish Club offers the opportunity for many to explore the Spanish language and immerse themselves in cultural activities that stem from the cultured roots of the Spanish heritage. From fun events to meaningful connections, Spanish Club provides benefits to students interested in strengthening their knowledge in the language and culture.
Sponsored by Spanish teacher Mrs. Alascia, the Spanish Club is different because of the small piece of home each student brings into the environment, creating a sense of community.
“A big standout to me is that especially our leaders, Alejandra and Soraya, speak Spanish at home and bring a little bit of their culture to the club. I think it’s important for us to have that cultural presence and promote a deeper understanding of the heritage,” Mrs. Alascia shares.
Spanish Club provides an in depth experience for everyone that gives a new perspective on Spanish culture for allowing students to engage in cultural activities that are open to everyone whether they are a native speaker, or someone who’s recently found a new interest in the Spanish customs.
Similarly, Spanish Club also offers students a new experience, and allows them to indulge in the rich culture of their peers. Those who are native speakers or familiar with the culture are able to share a new experience with their peers at school and give way for many memories to be made. Spanish Club heavily focuses on the voice of the students and allows its student leaders to have a big say in what activities are done in each club meetup. Students in the club often praise how member orientated the club is, allowing those in the board to decide what will be the next activity.
“A past activity I enjoyed was the Thanksgiving card I got to make for my mom… [Getting] to do something with my friends that I’d typically do with my family was really special to me and was a valuable experience,” senior Alan Cabrera shared.
Cabrera’s input speaks for the voice of many of those in the Spanish Club and serves as a testament to the club’s ability to create a meaningful and personal experience for its members. Activities like this allow students to practice traditions that they may or may not be used to, allowing them to have fun while potentially learning something new.
Spanish Club fosters a sense of belonging and cultural pride, while encouraging the members to step outside their comfort zone and embrace the beauty of diversity. Whether it is celebrating holidays or participating in interactive lessons, this club ensures that every member finds value in their involvement.
For students like Cabrera and many others, Spanish Club is more than an extracurricular activity. The clun is a space where language and culture comes together with friendship and forms an experience through memories that have the potential to last a lifetime.

I’m Jesus. I’m a sophomore, and this is my first year in journalism. During school I'm usually involved in something relating to the theater department.
