Do movies have the same feel they used to? Are they as enjoyable as they were in recent years with new movie releases? There have been many prequels to movies and remakes of classic movies being redone multiple times to the point where a lot of people lose interest. What happened to the creativity? Is it pure laziness all for the money?
There are arguments, mainly online, that the recent releases of new films are too repetitive. It is easy to recognize these patterns for those who watch a lot of films. Movies have been watered down to the same plot of a summer blockbuster with either really bad CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) or really good CGI action scenes, with the same predictable plot and same character development with cringe dialogue. Movies are becoming more about having an emotional storyline and less of the storytelling. Superhero remakes and animated 3D movies tend to get more appealing with the movie charts. Movies like those lose their relevance when publicized too much, meaning that the films that aren’t as popular anymore because everyone starts to lose interest. Movies have always been like this, they have just become more apparent. Movies do not need to have sequels, even if the first movie does well. The movie will not have the same nor the same amount of sales if the movie does not follow the same plot as before, like Moana 2 which was released a couple of months ago.
“I don’t think the Moana 2 movie was necessary. It was released about a couple of months ago and same with the Inside Out 2 and even a Superman movie being released,” said sophomore Laila Ulmer.
Even so, there are movies with different plots that get a lot of attention from critics. The big movie companies produce the same reusable plot with the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey is a narrative archetype that is portrayed in stories. It is used to tell a story of a hero’s quest who throughout the story faces challenges and changes. Not every movie plot is going to appeal to everyone and not everyone has to watch movies with the plot they like.
Letterboxd is a platform for film discovery, to share opinions with close friends and to see what others have recently watched. Letterboxd is a good website for expanding a broad horizon of different movies, classic movies or even recently released movies.
“I love Letterboxd, I am able to give my honest opinion on my favorite films that I did and did not like and I can share those opinions with my friends and recommend films for them,” stated sophomore Whitney Tita.
As we progress these films start to get old and tiring, movie theaters start to adapt and face changes on the way they are viewed, especially with streaming beginning to thrive. Netflix has made a habit of producing mediocre and low quality movies.
“Netflix movies are not as good as they used to be, I mean they’re making any that tries to cater to a younger audience but fails terribly,” sophomore Olivia Svejda said.
Movie production companies are not making the money. The decline in movie production quality has to do with the percentage of what movies people enjoy the most. They use those plots and hope it will do the same as it did before.
