The month of March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the perseverance of women throughout history. From fighting for equal rights to making groundbreaking contributions in various fields, women have played an essential role in shaping society. Many students at Marriotts Ridge High School (MRHS) shared their perspectives on what Women’s History Month means to them and how they believe it should be celebrated.
“I think [Women’s History Month is] significant because women have been oppressed in the past and it’s important to know that there should be gender equality in the modern era,” sophomore Sanjana Vooturi shared.
Others shared how this month is important to shed light on women’s growth in their place as people, stating how this month is a month for celebration as much as acknowledging the struggles.
“I think it’s really important to celebrate how far women have come in society and remember those achievements,” senior Jaya Shelat explained.
For many high school students, Women’s History Month is a month to highlight the female role models that they have in their lives. These role models are often family members, such as mothers and sisters, who have had a significant impact on their personal growth and values.
“My mom inspires me to be a better person and strive for achievement,” Shelat shared.
Other students mentioned celebrities or historical figures as inspiration, while Vooturi highlighted the influence of someone she knows personally.
“There are some celebrities, but most importantly my mom and people that I know in person,” Vooturi said.
Interestingly, Shelat shared that even friends can be role models, and role models don’t necessarily have to be those older than her; they can be her peers as well.
While Women’s History Month is important for women and girls all around the world, it is also important for boys to be interested in women’s history and to share how it impacts them and their lives.
“I think it’s important to highlight the challenges that women went through in previous history,” sophomore Srihith Velumuri explained.
Beyond personal role models and historical reflections, MRHS students have also shared ideas on how to increase awareness and engagement for Women’s History Month within the school. A suggestion was to create a spirit week dedicated to women’s history with different themes for each day that highlight various aspects of women’s contribution to society.
“Maybe we could do a certain theme every day, like dress as your female role model one day and equal rights another day,” Velumuri suggested.
Other students recommended spreading awareness through posters, school-wide announcements and social media campaigns.
“We could put up flyers around the school, make announcements or post on Instagram to educate more people about Women’s History Month,” sophomore Aditi Gande noted.
Ultimately, Women’s History Month is a month to be celebrated everywhere. At MRHS, Women’s History Month is about recognizing progress, fostering discussions and encouraging students to celebrate the influential women in their lives.
