MRHS’s Spring Spirit Week brought students together through five fun-filled days of themed outfits, friendly competition and energetic performances, all leading up to the much-anticipated pep rally on Friday. Although originally planned to take place outside, rain forced the pep rally indoors, prompting last-minute changes that still managed to keep spirits high.
Spirit Week kicked off on Monday with Multicultural Day, encouraging students to represent their heritage through clothing, accessories and flags. Tuesday was Neon Day, turning the hallways into a glowing sea of bright yellows, greens, pinks and oranges. On Wednesday, the building split into two distinct camps for Bikers (Underclassmen) vs. Surfers Day (Upperclassmen), with leather jackets and beachwear clashing in a friendly fashion rivalry. Thursday brought out everyone’s inner child for Return to Recess, as students dressed in playful attire, reminiscing about their elementary school years. And finally, Friday was Maryland Day, where each grade level showed off their pride by dressing in a specific color inspired by the state flag.
Unfortunately, the week’s last event, the outdoor pep rally, was cancelled due rain Friday morning. However, the Student Government Association (SGA) came up with a plan to create a memorable indoor experience.
“I’m on SGA, so I saw a lot of the behind-the-scenes planning,” said sophomore Anya Contractor. “Ultimately, we did what was best to comply with the weather. It was disappointing, but I think it still went really well. People loved watching the dancers, and there were fun games in the Commons.”
Instead of gathering on the field, students were split among various indoor activities. The Commons became a place for friendly competition between the grades through games, while the gymnasium had an entertaining performance by the school’s POMS dance team. A surprise knockout basketball tournament even took place in one of the gyms, drawing cheers from students and staff.
“I didn’t really like it,” said freshman Eldad Belayneh. “I was kind of uninterested because as a freshman I don’t really know what a regular pep rally is like. The performances were nice, and the games were cool. Brandon winning the basketball knockout? That was really awesome.”
Though the atmosphere may have felt a little different from years past, many students still appreciated the effort to keep spirits high.
“The school spirit was actually really nice,” Eldad added. “It was cool seeing everyone dressed up for the theme days. I loved it.”
Despite a few hiccups caused by the weather, Spring Spirit Week 2025 succeeded in bringing students together to celebrate their community and class pride. Whether it was cheering on their friends in a dance performance, dressing up in their brightest neon outfits, or playing games during Friday’s indoor celebration. Mustangs showed that school spirit doesn’t depend on the weather; it comes from the energy they bring.
As of now, there are no plans to reschedule the full outdoor pep rally. Still, this week proved that even with a last-minute change of plans, Mustang spirit remained strong.
