Summer is creeping across the corner, and weekend getaways are taking over the minds of many students who want an escape from everything academic. Maryland’s coastline offers many different sandy escapes that range from the family-friendly Ocean City boardwalk to the beautiful sunsets of Bethany Beach. Rehoboth Beach allows for fun opportunities at amusement parks to the peaceful dunes at Assateague Island, and people from Maryland are spoiled with options. With all these unique attractions, the question is: which getaway is the best for a day off?
“Ocean City is my favorite because the boardwalk is so lively and there is so much to do, like the Jolly Roger amusement park,” junior Advith Damidi explained.
Ocean City is a must-visit spot for students seeking the traditional Maryland beach experience. With its various options of stores, eateries, arcades and amusement rides, the three-mile boardwalk provides entertainment everywhere. Ocean City is a fun, action-packed choice for a weekend getaway, whether you want to grab a bucket of fries, ride the Ferris wheel or just lie in the sand.
“I love Bethany Beach because it is so chill and peaceful. Tanning is so nice and the water is so blue,” sophomore Katie Leader shared.
If a more laid-back atmosphere is appealing, Bethany Beach might be the ideal location. In contrast to Ocean City, Bethany offers a more peaceful setting and is well known for its small-town charm and breathtaking sunsets. Students can take a stroll down the serene beachfront, visit neighborhood shops or spend a quiet day reading by the water. It’s perfect for people who prefer a peaceful day off over crowded ones.
“Funland Amusement Park is my favorite part of Rehoboth Beach. I love going on all the rides with my friends and family,” junior Santino Pinos said.
Rehoboth Beach, a bit further north, is the ideal combination of leisure and excitement. There are plenty of things to do, including the Funland amusement park, outlet shopping and busy streets with eateries and stores. Students can race down waterslides in the morning, buy new summer clothes in the afternoon and eat fresh seafood by the sea in the evening.
“Every summer, I go to Assateague Island to ride horses by the sea, and it’s such a fun activity,” senior Evan Abraham exclaimed.
For anyone seeking something genuinely unique, Assateague Island provides a memorable experience. Assateague, well known for its untamed beaches and ponies, offers a unique chance to experience nature up close. Kayaking through the marshes, hiking through the routes or just having a peaceful picnic while observing horses in the wild are all options for visitors.
Whether someone is searching for a wild horse, peaceful sunset, thrilling rides or shopping, Maryland’s coastal retreats have plenty to offer. Every beach has a unique ambiance allowing students to discover the ideal place to unwind. The true winner of the beaches includes a place where people can enjoy the sun, sand and well deserved freedom.
